What Is the Difference Between 304 and 201 Stainless Steel?

Release time:

Aug 28,2026

Information Summary:

304 and 201 stainless steel are both commonly used materials for commercial kitchen equipment. However, they differ in corrosion resistance, composition, application environments, and cost. For hotels, restaurants, canteens, and central kitchens, the right stainless steel grade should be selected according to the equipment's application and working environment.

Corrosion Resistance:

304 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance and performs well in commercial kitchens where equipment is frequently exposed to water, moisture, and regular cleaning. 201 stainless steel also provides a certain level of corrosion resistance, but it is generally less resistant than 304 stainless steel in humid or high-salt environments.

Material Composition:

Both 304 and 201 are commonly used stainless steel grades, but their alloy compositions are different. 304 stainless steel generally contains higher levels of nickel and chromium, providing better corrosion resistance and stability. 201 stainless steel uses a different balance of elements such as nickel and manganese, which helps reduce material costs.

Application Environment:

304 stainless steel is more suitable for commercial sinks, work tables, preparation tables, storage cabinets, and other kitchen equipment that frequently comes into contact with water, food, or cleaning agents. For equipment used mainly in relatively dry environments with lower corrosion-resistance requirements, 201 stainless steel can also be considered depending on the application.

Service Life:

With proper use and maintenance, both materials can be used for commercial kitchen equipment. However, for hotels, restaurants, and large canteens where equipment is used frequently and exposed to humid conditions, 304 stainless steel generally provides better long-term performance.

Price Difference:

Due to differences in raw material composition, 304 stainless steel is generally more expensive than 201 stainless steel. Therefore, when purchasing commercial kitchen equipment, buyers should not compare price alone. Material grade, stainless steel thickness, structural design, manufacturing quality, and the actual working environment should also be considered.

Conclusion:

Choosing between 304 and 201 stainless steel is not simply a question of which material is “better.”The most suitable choice depends on the kitchen environment, equipment application, frequency of use, and project budget. Selecting the right stainless steel grade can help achieve a better balance between cost, durability, and long-term performance.
